The dissertation deals with the origin of the moment map in symplectic geometry and its application to toric varieties in algebraic geometry. Apart from treating basic theorems of symplectic geometry I mainly concentrate on toric symplectic manifolds and their relations to Delzant polytopes. In the field of algebraic geometry I discuss the convex appearance of the moment map in toric varieties and its representation with proper polyhedral divisors.
